Francis Augusto (b. 1993) is an Angolan-born artist. His practice delves into the human experience, adopting an observational approach to image-making. Augusto’s background as a refugee fleeing the civil war and his sociology degree greatly influenced his approach. Drawing from social theory, Augusto’s practice is a study of self, interaction and mundanity, operating at the intersection of social research, documentary, and art practice. His work seeks to have an intimacy with the audience, inviting the viewer into the frame, as if you were peering into your own or someone’s life.
His recent major work, Songs of Love & Loss, examines the complexities of romantic relationships through the lens of six individual stories. He is a winner of the British Journal of Photography's Portrait of Britain award and a 2023 grantee of Arts Council England project grants. His social documentary approach to image-making is visible in his commercial and editorial work for Fuji, Nike, and Bloomberg.
Francis is also available for lecturing, mentoring & critiquing opportunities.
